February 11 Update

February 11, 1996

'Love Life Drug Free', the theme of the month long proclamation by the Mayor of Maui County, under the auspices of 'Imi i loko i kou piko, and partnership', was the main event held on this Saturday at Maui Mall. The Maui Bahá'í youth workshop, one of several organization schedualed to perform for this show started at 1p.m.

Megan Grossman reported that, when the workshop arrived at 1p.m., for a scheduled performance to begin at 1:30 p.m., the M.C. asked if they could begin 'now'. Some of the previous performers did not have complete numbers and the whole performance was moved up.

"When we started, the Mall was empty except for a handful", shared Megan. "But as soon as we started our opening 'Step Dance', people started coming, and coming and coming. After the 'Step Dance', we did a 'Chastity Rap', performed by Jeramia Grossman, Byron Hobdy, La'a Chang, Joyene Holly and Arlene Yoshida. 'Choices', 'Racism', and 'Wealth and Poverty', followed.""Our new Bahá'í, Sam Green read a poem which he put together for this occassion, which ended with the words Love Life Drug Free, Love Life Drug Free'. Then a most unexpected thing occured, spontaneously, which none of us had anticipated. The whole crowd, totally unexpectedly moved into a circle and began singing 'Hawaii pono i'. People where crying, smiling, laughing. . ."

Next stop Hana! Friday 1p.m. General Assembly Hana High and Hana Elementary Schools, February 16th, with a 'full' weekend of events for this 3 Day weekend.

Megan, Bob Grossman, and Pam estimate that the crowd was at 125.
