Update 2/5/96: Martin Luther King Day Activities and News

The Youth marched in the parade down Ka'ahumanu Ave from Maui Community College to Maui Mall. They carried their banner 'MAUI BAHA'I YOUTH WORKSHOP', for all to see. At the Maui Mall, they performed three dances: Martyrs, Racism, and their 'Step Dance'. The event was filmed and shown on local cable. Their performance was a tremendous success, evoking the applause of the entire crowd.

These occassions are becomming noticably predictable, where certain individuals are moved rather deeply. At this event, the Mayor's Representative was moved to tears and said so when she presented the Mayor's speech. A few other people came over to the youth at the completion of the program and congratulated them. Thinking back on one such person: he was walking among the Workshop members, all in their white, 'One Planet One People Please' shirts and making his way through them came to one youth, (not a member, but in a white tee shirt) and proceeded to thank him wholeheartedly for such a wonderful performance. The youth, taken aback and obviously caught off guard, thanked him. Ryan Palmer and Crystal Gomes ( fairly new youth Bahá'í) hosted the Feast of Sovereignty. It was well-planned. The reading and selected song where all pre-arranged. The event came off as one of the most spiritual feasts in some time. The Bahá'í Center was packed.

I think we all kind of shake ourselves now and again seeing the incredable resolve of the youth.

We are proud to announce the enrollment of a whole family into the Faith. The Greens, Sam, Kim, and Ashley (10) all enrolled and are already taking part in the Faith's activities.

So, what else: The youth are in the initial stages of planning a travel teaching trip to the South Pacific this summer. We'll have more on that later.

'FIRST NITE MAUI'

Festival of entertainment opened with the Maui Bahá'í Workshop, performing three numbers.
It was a first class performance, and received tremendous applause. In this week's Maui News supplemental, 'Events of the Week', the Bahá'í Youth Workshop was featured as one of the 'high lites of entertainment', on the eve of their 1st year anniversary, having won the Mayor's 1st Place trophy in the Marching Division at King Kamehameha Day Parade, and participating in Maui's School's D.A.R.E. Program to assist children in realizing a drug free society.
The M.C., Jeff Reiss, a personal friend of many of the Bahá'ís really out did himself in supporting and boosting, "these fine young Mauians, with a great message for us all". At the end of the performance, Jessica Rifken, invited everyone to come up and ask questions and invited the youth to get involved with a great much of kids having fun and doing something important!

It was a knock out folks! Chicken skin brah!

Yes, we took photos and even videoed it. Whether you get them or not is another story. Later, Bob...

UPCOMING EVENTS ON MAUI

30 January 1996

On Friday, February 16th, the Maui Youth Workshop is traveling to Hana for the Presidents Day 'weekend (3 days). They are performing for the General Assembly of Hana High and Elementary Schools (one location) at 1pm. That evening there will be a dance at the Community pavilion. The next day the Workshop is doing direct teaching and that evening there will be another performance at the Helene Hall. Sunday evening the Worshop is conducting a fireside and then returning to the Central Valley Monday morning. They will be staying at the Hana Hotel as guest of the Hana Bahá'í Community.

Say prayer! Yes, this is major!

A photo session will be conducted for a press release kit on the 11th of February. A very nice photo pamphlet is being also created to advance the workshop's activities and obviously the promotion of the Faith.

Tentatively, the Workshop is going to be performing at Kihei Elementary School again for the General Assembly in late February.

The basic goal presently is to do 1 - 2 performances a month and 1- 2 service projects a month.
