EXPERIENCE:
I
am a qualified biological scientist and experienced teacher, having
recently moved to the Top End of the Northern Territory with my family
from Queensland. I am currently working as a secondary Maths/Science
teacher in Darwin. Prior to moving to the Top End I was a Queensland
TAFE teacher/lecturer for a number of years in 'Horticulture' and
'Environmental Studies' programs at TAFE Institutes in Brisbane. My
primary tertiary qualification from 1989 is a Bachelor in Agricultural
Science (Hons) majoring in Horticulture from the University of
Queensland. My teaching qualification from 1997 is a Graduate Diploma
of Adult and Vocational Education from Griffith University. Earlier
this year I graduated with a Master of Environmental Education with
Griffith University with a dissertation about ethnobotany in the Top
End. Last year I joined, and I am currently the Treasurer of, the
Northern Territory Chapter of the AAEE (Australian Association for
Environmental Education).
I describe myself as an 'environmental educator'. From broad experience
as a post-graduate student and former TAFE teacher, and as a Baha'i and
citizen of the world I have an intense academic interest in, and a
broad working knowledge of, natural resource management, conservation
and environmental issues.
SPECIAL ENVIRONMENTAL
INTERESTS:
From
recent completion of my studies towards a Master of Environmental
Education, I have developed a passionate knowledge and academic
interest in ethnobotany (the study of Indigenous peoples and plants). I
became familiar with Top End 'bushfood plants' and 'herbal medicines'.
Earlier this year I was on the organising committee of the SEANT
(Social Education Association of the NT) 'Sharing Resources' Conference
on May 10-11 at NTU. At this conference I presented a workshop
'Learning from the Bush' about actively involving the community and
school groups in learning about 'bushfood plants' and 'herbal
medicines'. In my time up here in the Top End I have experimented with
scientific photography and the propagation of native plants.
I have also an academic interest and practical experience from my time
in Queensland in farm forestry and the revegetation of mined and
degraded land.
