However, I am particularly interested in participatory educational strategies which place education right in the center of community life/environment so that each becomes an integral part of the other. I strongly feel that unless we harness the energy, capability and enthusiasm of young people, as early as possible, towards the transformation of society, we will not achieve sustainable development and peace. MSc degree in Environmental Management from Sheffield Hallam University. Started Ph.D. in Environmental Journalism in the same university October 1998. My other qualifications include a diploma in journalism from the Ghana Institute of Journalism, and an Advanced Certificate of Reporting from the Thomson Foundation, at the Department of journalism, University of Cardiff, Wales. I practised as a certified journalist for five years in Ghana, before I was awarded a Commonwealth Media Development Fund Scholarship to study advanced reporting in journalism at the Thomson Foundation in April 1996. I have written extensively on environmental issues in Ghana and currently writing for the 'Journal for Health' published in John Moores University in Liverpool. I was a project judge on a BBC Africa Network Service environmental competition under the theme: Planet Africa' at Bush House, London in February/March 1997. I have been a facilitator on a number of occasions at Bahá'í activities including summer school in Sidcot. I attended a European Bahá'í Youth Council seminar on Human Rights Education, held in Strasbourg from 7th -13th September, 1998.

NAME: Elizabeth L. Bowen

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
Dr. Bowen serves on the faculty of Morehouse School of Medicine in Atlanta in Preventive Medicine and Community Health. In 1990, she was the first Caucasian woman physician to join the predominantly African-American faculty. Dr. Bowen combines the clinical practice of medicine with international development, education, and public health. She has traveled and served in more than 60 countries. Dr. Bowen received her Medical Degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In addition to her MD, she holds a Doctorate in Education on the relationship of public health and nutrition to human development from the University of Massachusetts. Since 1992, Dr. Bowen has been actively involved in collaboration with the United Nations on issues of health, education, peace and sustainable development. In 1993, Dr. Bowen was elected to serve as President of Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR), the US affiliate of the In-terna-tional Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW). IPPNW and PSR shared in winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985. PSR has 35,000 physician members. IPPNW is a federation of affiliated physicians' organizations in 58 countries. The International Society of Doctors for the Environment (ISDE) is an affiliate of PSR. Dr. Bowen has served for several years as a representative of PSR to the United Nations. Dr. Bowen also serves as a representative to the United Nations for the International Society of Doctors for the Environment. Physicians for Social Responsibility's missions are to eliminate weapons of mass destruction, to reduce violence and the causes of violence, and to promote environmental health and environmental justice. ISDE cooperates with UNO, UNEP, UNESCO, WHO, EU, and NGOs to promote global environmental health and to network with national groups working on local projects. (See www.psr.org and www.isde.org .) Dr. Bowen also serves on the Board of Breakwell Education Association , which oversees the highly acclaimed international Nancy Campbell Collegiate Institute (www.nancycampbell.net ) and the newly emerging Stratford College of Liberal Arts, in Ontario, Canada. EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE:
I have two Bachelor of Art Degrees, in Communication Studies and Dramatic Art. My background is in documentary/film/television. I've produced environmental films i.e. Coastlines at the Crossroads, and The Channel Islands: A Living Time Capsule, and The Mono Lake Crisis.) I have also worked as a journalist, media consultant and public relations executive. My favorite projects include international relief work, bringing medical aid to the Philippines, Kosovo and Albania. Professionally, I have held positions at KSCI International Television, the Hospital Council of Southern California, and Homeless Healthcare Los Angeles. For the past 10 years I have been working pro bono or free of charge in the areas of poverty and social services. Presently I run a Bahá'í sponsored program in Marin County entitled Homeless Voicemail Program, delivering free voicemail services to 12 social service agencies and their clients. I also run a small foundation, the Meridian Health Foundation. I have been asked to join the advisory board of Roots of Peace, an organization that takes out landmines in underdeveloped countries and replaces them with agriculture and playing fields for children. I have also been asked to assist with World Environment Day 2005 in San Francisco. I am a member of the Local Spiritual Assembly in San Rafael, California and have served on LSA's for the last 12 years.

Bringing the issue of landmines to the environmental platform. Also, I have an extreme interest in helping to raise the world consciousness that religions and spiritual traditions can have a powerful impact on improving the environment.
