In 1990, she was the first Caucasian woman physician to join the predominantly African-American faculty. Dr. Bowen received her Medical Degree from Jefferson Medical College in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In addition to her MD, she holds a Doctorate in Education on the relationship of public health and nutrition to human development from the University of Massachusetts. Since 1992, Dr. Bowen has been actively involved in collaboration with the United Nations on issues of health, education, peace and sustainable development. In 1993, Dr. Bowen was elected to serve as President of Physicians for Social Responsibility (PSR), the US affiliate of the In-terna-tional Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War (IPPNW). IPPNW and PSR shared in winning the Nobel Peace Prize in 1985. PSR has 35,000 physician members. IPPNW is a federation of affiliated physicians' organizations in 58 countries. The International Society of Doctors for the Environment (ISDE) is an affiliate of PSR. Dr. Bowen has served for several years as a representative of PSR to the United Nations.
