Alcohol in Cooking

Though I am not Bahai, my girlfriend is. I have several recipes that call
for food to be cooked in wine or sherry. If I want to cook with her, I
can't make these dishes. I hear that there are good substitutions for wine
and sherry.

I realize that it might seem like this would be a question better asked in
rec.foods.cooking, or whatever. But I thought that people here might have
more experience with finding substitutions for alcohol in cooking.

So, can anyone suggest to me what I might substitute?
