I understand that that is the majority opinion, and I had to deal with it
too. There are several texts in the Bible that strongly suggest a
non-physical interpretation and I would like to suggest here only one
that I consider very explicative:

Acts chp. 2 - where Peter explains the people in Jerusalem about the gift
of the Holy Spirit and uses a quote of the Hebrew Bible to show that it
fulfilled a specific prophecy.
The prophecy was one by the prophet Joel. Now look at the text of the
prophecy and what it predicted that would happen and then compare that
with what actually happened in Jerusalem in the day of Pentecost. You
will notice that in order to accept the interpretation of Peter of this
prophecy a non-literal interpretation is a must, otherwise it falls
apart. So, if for Peter 2000 years ago a non-literal interpretation was
the correct one, why would we today need a different method of
interpretation. Do we know better than Peter who was with the Lord Jesus
during His whole ministry and listened to the teachings of Jesus daily?

I think this is something to ponder about....

Hope this helps.

Bye,
